I am so excited to finally release the official music video for my song “Sobering” from the album of the same name. A lot of time and effort and love was put into making this video. I wanted to capture the emotions in the images along with telling the story. I wanted you to be able to see the emotion in the song.
I had the idea for the “Sobering” music video one day while doing something completely unrelated. I can’t exactly remember what. Anyway, I could picture in my mind the blurred lights from the album art laid on top of time-lapse images of carnivals, fairs, lights and more.
It looked beautiful in my mind and I knew that I wanted to figure out a way to make it happen.
I started looking through footage I’d captured over the years. Anything that I could soften and let colors come through. I found live footage from concerts with colorful stage lights to sync to the music. I found random B-roll to add in of blurred fireworks and carnival rides.
I had my colors, I had my blurred lights, I had carnivals, fairs, lights and more. Next I just had to edit everything together to tell the story.
It took several passes to get it right. I spent hours moving footage around, swapping backgrounds and overlays, change opacity of footage.I’d set it to render over night and wake up in the morning and watch the final render several times before deciding it wasn’t quite right.
The final version of the “Sobering” music video is, along with the album, one of my very favorite projects I’ve worked on over the years. It’s beautiful, it’s sad, it’s hopeful.
Without further ado, I present to you, the official “Sobering” music video.
